BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

Promotion of any industry is great — if it works; otherwise it may be an expensive fiasco.

How long did we listen to the glowing testimonials involving a dock at Sears Island? Now we are faced with the same sort of action involving Mack Point.

There’s no great mention of wood chips which dominated the proposal for Sears Island before Augusta slam-dunked the project.

Someone was so sure the project would be approved that a few million dollars worth of ordered steel lies rusting on the Searsport dump. A floating dredge arrived and began operations only to soon sail away into the sunset. A causeway and a fine road onto Sears Island was constructed which will obviously be a great benefit to whoever owns the island.

More power to those and their visionary ideas. If they think new docks will be beneficial, then by all means build them; only don’t involve the taxpayers in the action. Win or lose, we wouldn’t get a red cent out of it in return. We hope the project will be successful. Capt. Don Rogers Belfast
