Condon erases Blodgett mark with ease

BANGOR – Watching Kim Condon play with ease and grace, it was really easy to forget how badly she had rolled that right ankle eight days earlier.

Once covered by sliced potatoes, that ankle was encased in layers of unyielding white athletic tape and sweat, hiding the pretty colors of a deep bruise that stretched up to her calf muscle.

Adrenaline is a fabulous thing.

“I practiced a little more Thursday and a little on Friday, but practices don’t quite get your adrenaline up the way playing out in front of the crowd does,” she said with a giggle.

There was no pain for Condon or any of her Presque Isle teammates as they completely dominated Portland for a 77-49 state Class A schoolgirl basketball win Saturday night.

The 5-foot-11 guard took full advantage of Portland’s 2-3 zone. Shooting 9 of 11 from the field in the first half, Condon netted two 3-pointers on her way to 10 consecutive points in a 1:04 outburst early in the first quarter.

The 26-point first half was followed by a marginally more anxious second half as Condon unwittingly chased Cindy Blodgett’s 1993 state game scoring record of 40 points.

Condon came within two points of tying the Lawrence of Fairfield legend’s mark on a fast-break layup with 6:23 left in the game but bricked the next four free throws.

Three minutes later, she managed to tie the record with two free throws.

“[Coach Dick Barstow] pulled me over and he said, `Kim, you only need one more point. Why don’t you try to make a free throw?” Condon recalled. “And the first one I made [with 3:01 left] was the one I needed after I had missed like six consecutive.”

Ironically, Blodgett earned her record against coach Ed Feeney Jr.’s Portland squad.

“I didn’t think we played well against the way she played,” Feeney said. “On the tape, she was a good player but I didn’t expect that much from her. But she did a real good job.

“She was the difference throughout the whole game. She was the big difference right there.”
