UMaine splits in tourney

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Maine women’s softball team split a pair of games Saturday in the Winthrop Invitational tournament. Maine beat Virginia Tech 11-3 and lost to Akron 4-2.

Maine finished first-round play in the tournament with a 2-2 record and is now 14-11 overall.

In the first game, Akron scored three runs in the second ining and held on for the win.

In the second game, Sarah Jewett had two singles, a double and three RBI to pace Maine.

Kathryn Murphy added three singles for the Black Bears, and Vicki Brenner scattered eight hits over six innings to earn the win.

Husson splits at Bloomfield

At Bloomfield, N.J., undermanned Husson College of Bangor played the final 2 1/2 innings with only eight players, but still pulled out a split against Bloomfield College.

Bloomfield won the opener 5-4, before the Braves came back to win 8-7 in the nightcap.

In game two, Husson pitcher Louise Bryant was forced to leave the game in the top of the fifth inning after being hit on the hand with a pitch. The Braves, who had only nine of their 10 players available Sunday, responded with a five-run sixth inning.

Amanda Pomerleau not only pitched the final three innings to earn the win, she rapped a three-run double to provide the winning margin. She also singled.

Jenn Russ provided a double, two singles and three RBIs for Husson. Emily Burrill had a triple and two singles.

In the opener, Pomerleau hit two batters in the seventh, forcing in the winning run.

Burrill tripled twice for Husson, while Yvonne Penney and Amy Coppola each had an RBI single.
