Man who stole from charity gets jail time

PORTLAND — A man who stole more than $47,000 from a Harrison charity will spend three months behind bars.

As part of a plea bargain, Alan Burnell, 49, also was ordered Wednesday to pay restitution to the Harrison Youth Boosters.

Burnell was indicted last June on a charge he embezzled money from the Harrison Youth Boosters. The private volunteer group sponsors recreation projects, including a youth stickball program at the 15-acre Field of Dreams complex.

He was sentenced in Cumberland County Superior Court to 364 days in jail, with all but 90 days suspended. He also will serve a year of probation after his release.

Burnell told the court he didn’t consider his actions “stealing” because he always intended to pay the money back.
