ST. ALBANS — A chimney fire is the suspected cause of an afternoon fire in St. Albans Monday that destroyed a remote cabin owned by Paul Cyr of Dexter. The cabin was on a privately maintained road about a half-mile off Route 152. The road, now discontinued, was known as the Old County Road.
According to St. Albans Fire Department Capt. Jason Emery, firefighters were limited in the equipment that could get to the scene. Only four-wheel trucks, one at a time, could get to the remote scene on the narrow road.
“It was just about gone by the time we got there,” Emery said.
Several firefighters were forced to use their own four-wheel-drive trucks or walk into the scene.
The fire was discovered by another resident on the road who had been pushing back snowbanks with a bulldozer.
According to Emery, Cyr had been to the cabin and started a wood fire to warm the structure before he and his wife arrived to spend a few days. The Cyrs reportedly were just leaving their Dexter home en route to the cabin when they were notified of the fire.
