BDN on the bandwagon

I read in your March 24 editorial that the Bangor Daily News called last year’s decision by the Bangor City Council to delay any increases in the sewer rate until July a welcome respite for Bangor ratepayers, who had seen sewer fees more than triple since 1988.

I’m glad to see that it has only taken the BDN one year to reach the same conclusion myself and four other councilors reached last year in passing that order. Rather tha praise, the BDN one year ago was calling the order shortsighted and one that was only introduced to win votes in an upcoming election. I argued that the citizens should expect the council to raise funds through tax and rate increases only to the extent that it was necessary. The rallying cry I used was, “Take what is only necessary, not a penny more or a penny less!” Nice of the BDN to jump on the bandwagon.

Let’s see, if the current trend holds true, around the end of June, the BDN will come to the realization that the decrease in the property tax rate passed last year by the city council was a good decision, too. Christopher M. Popper Bangor
