CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Pete Albers’ single to center field scored Andrew Huling with one out in the 12th inning Thursday as Harvard eked out a 5-4 college baseball victory over the University of Maine.
The Crimson, who had scored one run each in the ninth and 11th innings to preserve a tie, reached freshman Jared Cochran for three hits in the final inning. Harvard improved to 10-7, while Maine slipped to 13-15.
Bob Wiles, a freshman from Gardiner, was outstanding in his first collegiate start. The lefthander held Harvard to four hits and one run through six innings.
UMaine senior Garrett Quinn had his streak of 14 straight saves snapped in the ninth inning. He has converted on 17 of 19 career save opportunities.
In the pivotal 12th, Brian Ralph singled, moved up on a Todd Harris sacrifice and took third on a wild pitch. He scored when Huling tripled down the right-field line.
Maine had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning. Keith Croteau reached on an error, stole second an out later, and moved to third on ball four to Ron Coombs. Jeff Longo hit an RBI single off the pitcher, but Coombs was thrown out trying to take third on the deflection.
Nick Caiazzo had two hits for the Bears including a one-out home run, his fifth of the season, to give Maine a 3-2 lead in the 11th. Longo and Croteau had two hits each.
Albers doubled and singled for the Crimson.
Harvard took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but Maine scored two unearned runs in the sixth. Longo singled with two out, T.J. Sheedy walked, and Caiazzo singled to center. Longo scored when the throw to the plate got through the catcher.
A wild pitch scored Sheedy from third base.
The Crimson equalized in the ninth behind three pinch hitters, scoring after two were out. Quinn walked Brett Vankoski, Mike Hochanadel singled, and Bob Menkiti stroked an RBI single.
Caiazzo’s homer to right-center gave Maine a short-lived lead in the 11th. Harvard countered when Brian Glover walked Erik Binkowski, who advanced on a wild pitch.
Longo, who had pitched an inning in the eighth, came on to walk Jason Larocque and hit Hochanadel with a pitch. The tying run scored when pinch hitter Mike Madden grounded into a run-scoring 4-6-3 double play.
