AMHERST, Mass. – Two four-run innings helped the University of Massachusetts sweep a midweek baseball doubleheader, 9-8 both times, from the University of Maine here Wednesday and offset a four-home run performance from UMaine junior left fielder Rex Turner.

The Black Bears drop to 17-17, while Massachusetts improves its record to 16-6.

In the second game, a bases-loaded walk followed by Doug Clark’s one-out grand slam highlighted a five-run third inning for the Minutemen, who came back from a 6-0 deficit.

Aaron Braunstein led off the four-run fourth with a home run before Jason Kudrikow hit an RBI single. A two-out fielding error by Maine center fielder Ron Coombs plated the final two runs.

Travis Veracka (2-1) pitched three innings of relief for the win.

Turner paced the Maine offense with a two-run homer in the first and a leadoff homer in the third. Coombs went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Dave Foran (3-4) took the loss in relief.

Matt Wolcott went 3-for-4, including a solo home run and three RBIs, to lead Massachusetts. Gorrie went 2-for-3 with four RBIS. Ryan Cameron (2-0) picked up the victory.
