Turgeon to walk on at Maine

The University of Maine’s hockey team has added another Maine native to its defense corps.

Former Cony High School of Augusta All-State defenseman Eric Turgeon, who has spent the last two years at the Taft School, a Watertown, Conn., prep school, has verbally committed to attend Maine.

He will be a recruited walk-on next season.

Due to NCAA guidelines, Maine coach Shawn Walsh cannot comment on him.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Turgeon played for three years at Cony before attending Taft.

He will join former Messalonskee High School standout Nate Ponitz, who played at Exeter Academy (N.H.) this past season, as an incoming defenseman from the state.

“He works hard and he competes out there,” said New York Islanders scout Jim Madigan. “He has more to work with at this stage of his career than [Andy] Silverman and the [Brian] White kid had at a similar stage.

Cony High coach Tony LaPlante said Turgeon may not be an impact player immediately but said he could become one in time.
