Cox knocks MA past Schenck

LINCOLN – Pinch hitter Leroy Cox knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday, lifting Mattanawcook Academy to a season-opening 4-2 schoolboy baseball victory over Schenck of East Millinocket.

Ben Staples had seven strikeouts and held the Wolverines to just one hit to pick up the win for Mattanawcook. Nick Potts hit a solo homer for the Lynx.

Justin Page had a single in the fifth inning for Schenck’s lone hit.

Penobscot Valley, DI-S split

At Deer Isle, Nate Cyr gave up just three hits and struck out 14 as the Patriots earned a split of a doubleheader.

In the second game, Nate Cyr and Cory Eaton pitched complete games, but with vastly different results. While Cyr won, Eaton gave up just two hits but took the loss because of 10 Deer Isle-Stonington errors.

In the first game, Ben Barrows had two hits and two RBIs and Josh Weed had a three hits and an RBI as the Mariners picked up the win. Andy Bye allowed just one earned run for the winners.

Jeremiah Jewell knocked in three runs with a home run and two singles, while Steve Hallett singled twice.

At Hermon, Mark Alaimo had three hits and two RBIs to spark the Hawks past Foxcroft.

Sean Smith added a triple, a single and two RBIs, and Scott Porter added two RBIs for Hermon.

Justin Clawson and Robby Freese each had doubles for the Ponies.

At Ellsworth, Torrey McDonald, Ben Donaldson and James Cobb drove in two runs apiece to lead the Eagles over Stearns of Millinocket.

McDonald doubled and singled, Donaldson hit two singles, and Cobb had a double. Lucas Hardison (1-0) notched the win.

Darrin Daniels and Aaron Civiello each singled twice for Stearns.

At Bucksport, Steve Smith belted a three-run homer in the second inning, doubled, and singled to lead the Golden Bucks.

Smith drove in four runs, while Chad Gilley had two singles and three RBIs. Jody Peak added a pair of singles for Bucksport.

Kenny Welch had two singles and a double while Nate Conners singled twice for the Tigers.

At East Sullivan, the Vikings pounded out 12 hits and George Tripp pitched a shutout in a victory over Sumner.

Tripp struck out seven and also had a homer, a double and two RBIs for Searsport. Matt Martin had three RBIs and Rod Damon added a home run.

Matt Welch and Brad Frye had the lone hits for Sumner.

At Belfast, Sazi Guthrie struck out seven and allowed just one hit as the Lions downed Mount View.

Joe Littlefield had two hits, including an RBI double for Belfast. Guthrie also had three hits and an RBI.

Adam Page had the lone hit for Mount View of Thorndike.

Rockland 10, Maranacook 3

At Rockland, Steve Galkowski (2-0) pitched a five-hitter while striking out 13 and walking three, and drove in two runs on a double and two singles to pace the host Tigers to victory.

Travis Reynolds doubled, singled twice and drove in a run for Rockland. David Carter had three singles and one RBI.

Tony Creek and Darren Knowles each had two singles and an RBI for Maranacook of Readfield.

At Bucksport, Kelly Downes struck out 14 batters and had a pair of hits to lead the Golden Bucks over the Tigers.

Jessica Sawyer led the Bucksport offensive attack with three hits and four RBIs. Kelsey Wardell and Lacey Annis both had three hits and two RBIs.

Jess Garland and Lisa Fogler each had RBI singles for Dexter.

PVHS sweeps DI-Stonington

At Deer Isle, Penobscot Valley of Howland had plenty of offense and was the beneficiary of 24 errors in sweeping Deer Isle-Stonington.

The Howlers won the opener 29-6 and took the nightcap 20-15.

In the first game, shortened to five innings by the 12-run rule, Heather Poirier paced PVHS with three hits and three RBIs. Winner Jennie Neal plated four runs with two triples.

Rachel Dawson collected three hits and Carrie Braley had two hits for the winners.

Misty Fifield singled three times for the Mariners, who got two singles from Andrea Weed and a three-run homer by Morgan Hardy.

In the second game, Braley led the Howlers with a triple, double and single good for two RBIs. Lindsay Wakefield tripled and singled, while Jennie Weymouth doubled and singled.

Ellisha White had four hits for the hosts. Angela Douglass smacked a three-run homer and two singles and Weed provided a double and two singles for the Mariners. Samantha Hawkins singled three times and Abby Gross added two hits.

At Hermon, the Hawks pounded out 10 hits downing Foxcroft.

Dawn Cyr, Megan Maskus and Sara Devlin each had two hits for Hermon. Angela Stevens pitched a complete game to get the win for the Hawks.

Becky Warren had a pair of hits for Foxcroft.

At Ellsworth, the Eagles’ Lyndsy Patten fashioned a perfect game, outdueling Jen Wilson as the hosts remained unbeaten.

Patten, a sophomore lefthander, struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. She had one of Ellsworth’s three hits.

Sara Roy delivered a two-run single and Kim Beekman singled for the Eagles.

Hard-luck loser Wilson struck out 10 and walked three for Stearns of Millinocket.

At Belfast, Tanya Flood backed the five-hit pitching of Maghan Vaughan with two doubles and a single (1 RBI) as the Lions won.

Vaughan helped her own cause with two hits and an RBI, while Jessica Aldus drilled a two-run double.

Megan Williams had a two-run double for Mount View of Thorndike.

At East Sullivan, Sarah Webster had 14 strikeouts, gave up just two hits and walked just one as the Vikings downed Sumner.

Michelle Murphy, Billi Jo Poody, Jessi Barton and Jenn Mace each had hits for Searsport which scored five unearned runs.

Brittany Willey and Amber Pinkham had singles for the Tigers.

At Rockland, Jamie Pruett pitched a four-hitter and had six strikeouts to lead Maranacook of Readfield to the win.

At Mount Desert, Crystal Graves and Sadie Damon each rapped a double and two singles to power Mount Desert Island to victory.

Holly Walker tripled and singled, while Kaitlin Abbott and Riley McIsaac added two hits each behind freshman Emmy Renault, who earned her first varsity win.

Asheley Simpson stroked a double and two singles for the Red Riots.

At Blue Hill, Emily Lewandowski had three singles and scored three runs as the Eagles remained unbeaten.

Sara Haney added a single and a homer for George Stevens. Heidi Carroll allowed just four hits while striking out four and walking none.

Sarah Matulis and Angela Allen each had RBI singles for the Red Devils of East Corinth.
