Bapst, Orono teams reign in rain

ORONO – In the end, John Bapst was the only team left on the track in the puddles.

Rain and wind had driven everyone else onto buses in hopes of drying out.

The purple-clad crowd huddling for warmth did find some redemption in hanging around the track on a miserable Tuesday afternoon at Orono High School.

The Crusader girls grabbed the win with 104.3 points, besting second-place Orono by 38.1 points and Ellsworth by 45.8 points. Searsport finished with 12 points.

The Orono boys got a 30-point day from senior Craig Sidell to coast to a 98.5 victory. John Bapst finished with 63 points, Ellsworth was third with 57.5 and Searsport collected 36 points.

The Crusaders picked up three individual wins and one relay victory. But the best points came from all the other places they hogged as other teams sprinted for the bus’ warmth.

There were the four places they picked up in the 100-meter dash, 400 and the javelin. Also, the three pointworthy spots in the 300-meter hurdles, the 800, 3,200 and discus.

Kira Young came up with a personal best of 52.4 seconds in her 300-hurdles victory, Alexis Frasz earned the 400-meter win in 1:09.2.

And whatever crowd showed up for the meet was long gone by the time Jessica Miragliuolo grabbed a 13:32 victory in the 3,200, the day’s last race.

The slim crowd did witness the Penobscot Valley Conference’s continuing youth movement, which stormed through the girls meet. Orono sophomore Kate Yerxa picked up wins in the discus (85-2) and shot put (33-7 3/4) and Ellsworth freshman Allison Cherry managed to squeeze in triple jump and high jump wins with 31-9 1/2 and 5-0 efforts, respectively.

“She’s just a hard worker. She does everything she’s supposed to do and comes back for more,” Ellsworth jumping coach Jim Shedeck said. “She loves competition and she never would have done five if that girl [Orono’s Liz Chambers] hadn’t been there. She would have done 4-10.”

The Orono boys picked up eight wins in 17 events to shut out the rival Eagles and Crusaders.

While Sidell played with a new event, snatching the long jump win in 20-7 1/2, Jeff Mateja, Preston Ringo, Mike Pare, Kevin Stecher and Dwayne Parson all picked up convincing wins for the Riots.

Ringo crushed the Luchini-less 1600 competition in a time of Ringo crushed the Luchini-less 1600 competition in a time of 4:40.2. His nearest opponent, John Bapst’s Mark Lockman, arrived at the finish line 19.5 seconds later.

Ellsworth’s brother-duo of Joey Luchini and Louie Luchini later ran the 800, finishing 1-2 in time of 2:00.6 and 2:05.7, respectively.

Sidell, who actually enjoyed Tuesday’s wet conditions, screamed out of the blocks in the 100 meter dash and powered his way to an 11.5-second victory.

“I kind of like it because I’ve had my best times in weather like this,” the Orono senior said.

Jason Light picked up Searsport’s sole win of the day with a 111-11 discus toss, beating teammate Jonah O’Roak’s effort of 95-9.
