UMass could face NCAA sanctions

AMHERST, Mass. – The NCAA’s Executive Committee is meeting Thursday to consider sanctions against the University of Massachusetts over alleged payments a sports agent made to basketball star Marcus Camby.

How much money and other gifts Camby allegedly received before leaving school for the pros at the end of the 1995-1996 season was not immediately clear.

However, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday that university officials told the NCAA that Camby repaid a Connecticut agent $28,000 received by Camby and his friends after the agent got into trouble with loan sharks.

The university could be stripped of its Final Four finish and its share of the 1996 NCAA tournament revenues if the Executive Committee, composed of officials from member schools, finds Camby violated its rules on amateur play.
