NEWPORT — A series of executive sessions dominated the Tuesday night meeting of the SAD 48 board of directors. Two of the sessions involved student suspensions.

The first of the executive sessions, and by far the longest, came about unexpectedly.

Superintendent William Braun recommended the appointment of James Winslow as assistant superintendent and personnel director for the 1997-1998 school year. Winslow served the district this year in several interim positions, including principal and the position for which he was nominated Tuesday night.

Braun proposed the position for a four-day work week, and gave Winslow high marks for professionally performing all the work assigned to him.

Braun’s recommendation drew an immediate motion for an executive session to discuss the personnel matter. Former board Chairwoman Robin Duplisea called for the session, and her motion was quickly seconded.

The board took no action after the executive session. And no further comment was made on appointing Winslow.
