ORONO – Orono’s Mike Perry felt a little weak in the early innings and fell behind 6-3 to Bangor after two innings. But considering what he’s been through, that is quite understandable.

Perry said he has been sick the past couple of weeks and has been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic inflamation of the digestive tract. After struggling for the first two innings, he was able to recover and hold on for a 10-8 win.

“I felt kind of weak at the beginning but towards the end I got a little more pumped up,” said Perry. “I’m going in for more tests this week.”

Perry fell behind early, allowing three runs in each of the first two innings. Bangor’s T.J. True led off the first, turning an 0-2 count into 3-2 count before hitting a double to left field. Mark Alaimo followed with a single, knocking in True.

Tommy Waterman and Joel Perry both singled to load the bases for Nate Waring. Waring hit a long fly ball to center which Steve Osborne caught on the run and fell backwards, allowing both Alaimo and Waterman to score.

Waring added a two-run single in the second as Bangor scored three more times. Then Perry settled down. He allowed just three hits over the next three innings, but did allow a two-run home run to Waterman in the top of the sixth which pushed the Comrades’ lead to 8-3.

Orono rallied in the bottom of the sixth, finally getting to Bangor pitcher Travis Penny, scoring seven times. Penny had allowed just seven hits and struck out seven through the first five innings.

In the sixth, Orono’s Robey Rhoads hit a two-run double to cut the lead to 8-5 and Jeremy Poulin knocked Rhoads in with a double, also. Pinch hitter Nick Potts followed with a triple and after John McGlinn walked Penny was pulled for Josh Hiatt.

“I think it was bad pitch selection,” said Penny. “At the beginning of the game I was mixing up my pitches well. I started throwing a lot of fastballs because my arm was getting a little tight.”

Orono’s Jared Foster got to Hiatt quickly, ripping a triple to right-center that scored a pair of runs and gave the Twins a 9-8 lead.

“Coach [Dave] Paul just told me to rip the ball and he gave me a fastball down the middle, so I just swang,” said Foster.

“Early in the game Travis was throwing a hell of a game and I thought it was his game to see how far he could go,” said Bangor coach Joe Nelson. ” I don’t think he tired too much. I just think they really hit the ball.”

After his team gave him a two-run lead, Perry didn’t feel quanymore and proceed to strike out the side.

“I was really pumped, I felt real strong,” said Perry, who struck out nine and walked just four.

Brewer 17, Hermon 4

At Hermon, the slugging power of Greg Gobel and catcher Chad Gilley helped Brewer win.

Gobel blasted a three-run home run in the fourth, and Gilley put the icing on the victory cake with his grand slam in the seventh. Jody Peak also blasted a two-run double in the fourth.

John Shoppe smacked a three-run double for Hermon, and Adam Austin delivered with an RBI single.
