BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

Without sounding too prophetic and yet realizing that one’s head should not be buried in the sand, the reality of things as they are vis-a-vis our parish church renovation is presenting a very unhealthy picture, to say the least.

It makes little difference at this time whether the polarization of our parish exists because of misinformation or the lack of proper and adequate explanation of the proposed plans at well-advertised public places. The fact is that a rift has been existing for many months now, and it is growing in spite of the many warinigs of such a division. Several parishioners have expressed their concerns, orally and in writing, but little has been done to correct this very undesirable situation.

Many of the various expressed concerns focused on the estimated cost of the total project and also reflected great dissatisfaction at the many proposed changes which they consider not needed and not essential. The uncertainty of the future, the loss of the existing church’s unique character and beauty, combined with the questionable ability to finance such a renovation project, all weigh heavily on the hearts of many parishioners regardless of their financial status.

This status quo does not bode well financially in view of our declining and aging senior population. A project of this nature and size demands the total commitment of the parishioners, if it is going to succeed. Let us keep in mind that “a house divided shall not stand.” Gerard “Babe” Cyr Van Buren
