BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

In response to the letter by David P. Frasz, M.D. that appeared in the Bangor Daily News on June 26; it is refreshing to find an oasis of logic in this desert of insanity by which we are surrounded.

It is sad when a few radical people like Dr. Erik Steele and Joan Poindexter can sway enough people to mandate something like the seat belt law, which had already been turned down four times. Seat belts do nothing to prevent accidents and in many cases take lives instead of saving them. Obviously safety is not the only factor here because we know speed kills, and a short time after the seat belt law went into effect, there was talk of increasing the speed limit.

Consider these ideas: running headlights night and day thus increasing visibility and helping prevent accidents; slow down thus decreasing the amount of damage in an accident.

Make the state liable in accidents where the people were clearly killed or injured because of seat belt use. This would give compensation to victims who were literally mandated to death. Nelson Hussey Howland
