ELLSWORTH — A 65-year-old man struck his head when the parked car in which he was sitting Thursday morning was rear-ended by another vehicle whose driver fell asleep at the wheel.
Steven Eaton, 41, of Pacheco, Calif., was driving eastbound on Route 172 around 11:50 a.m. taking his father, Rodney Eaton of Little Deer Isle, to an Ellsworth hospital, when they briefly pulled over to the side of the road near the sharp Woods Hill curve.
As they sat in the 1988 Buick, it was struck from behind, said Officer Dorothy Small of the Ellsworth Police Department.
Amanda Locke, 18, of Surry reportedly was on her way to work when she fell asleep and drove her 1987 Plymouth into the Eaton’s car.
Rodney Eaton, who was not wearing a seat belt and struck his head on the car’s interior, was transported by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. He was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon. Locke and the younger Eaton, who both were wearing seat belts, were uninjured.
Both vehicles were considered a total loss from the accident. Small said Locke was tired from caring for a new infant, and no charges will be filed.
