Connecticut leads in Babe Ruth tournament

The Babe Ruth regional baseball tournament got under way on Saturday in Houlton with three games and continued on Sunday with four more.

On the first day of action, Rhode Island beat Vermont 9-7, New Hampshire downed Western Massachusetts 5-1 and Connecticut routed Maine 12-1.

On Sunday, Eastern Massachusetts takdefeated host Houlton 11-9. New Hampshire needed extra innings to get past Rhode Island 5-4. Connecticut had its offense working for the second straight day, as it pounded Eastern Massachusetts 13-2. Western Massachusetts also had a fair day at the plate, ripping a dozen hits to defeat Vermont 15-10.

Rhode Island 9, Vermont 7

Rhode Island put together a pair of four run innings in the middle three frames to edge Vermont.

Jared Guterros laced a double and a single to pace Rhode Island. Ian Campopaino went the distance to earn the victory.

Mike Riley keyed Vermont with a double and a single.

New Hampshire 5, West Mass. 1

New Hampshire posted a late rally with a 4-run eighth inning to defeat West Massachusetts.

Matthias Kuchemester started the rally with a single, which was followed by RBIs from Ken Guyotte, Cory Meserve and Dan Allard.

Chris Shank struck out 15 batters in his 7-plus innings of work. He also drove in the teams only run with an RBI single.

Connecticut 12, Maine 1

Connecticut pounded out 14 hits in only five innings to stop Maine.

Mike Burke singled three times in the game, which was ended by the 10-run rule. Chris Wasil singled and tripled for Connecticut. Paul Katz ripped a double and single and Tom Uva singled twice.

Mike Donato singled twice for Maine.

Eastern Mass. 11, Houlton 9

Eastern Massachusetts scored the go ahead run and added another for insurance in the top of the sixth inning. This came on the heels of Houlton tying the game in the fifth inning with a four run inning of their own.

Jim Ryan, Jeremy Carrol and Mik Girr each had a pair of hits in the win for Eastern Massachusetts.

Houlton received two hits apiece from Mike Weston, Doug Finnie and Micah Sampson.

New Hampshire 5, Rhode Island 4

Ken Guyotte pitched a complete game six-hitter, striking out 10 and walking only one to earn the victory.

Bob Sullivan had two singles and two doubles in the win. Guyotte drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and also had a single.

Joe Fusco tripled for Rhode Island.

Connecticut 13, Eastern Mass. 2

Connecticut continued it’s power display for the tournament with another double digit run performance to down Eastern Massachusetts.

Mike Burke and Mike Cappiero each tripled and singled for Connecticut. Mike Lacerenza also tripled for the winners.

Jim McShane provided the only offense for Eastern Massachusetts with a two- run home run on the bottom of the first inning.

Big numbers in this tournament continued to pile up when Western Massachusetts players crossed the plate fifteen times in the win.
