Barrett Williams was the No. 3 catcher on the Husson Braves roster last season.

John Kolasinski didn’t really like the fact that after injuries to Tim Pert and Roy Peary, Williams, a third baseman, was forced to catch.

Kolasinski hopes he took care of his catching problems and added depth to his pitching staff with 13 recruits, including three catchers and seven pitchers.

With the addition of Troy Corey (Brewer), John McGlinn (Presque Isle), and Alec Cyr (Skowhegan), Kolasinski should be assured he won’t have to force infielders into action behind the plate.

“We really wanted to shore up our catching and I think we did that,” said Kolasinski. “Last year we had our No. 3 catcher catching. Injuries really hurt us there.”

The Braves added two of Eastern Maine’s top Class B pitchers in Orono’s Mike Perry and Bucksport’s Chris Soper. Husson also landed Pudge Tarbox of Sanford, John Montgomery of Millinocket’s Stearns High, Byron Carver of Jonesport-Beals High in Jonesport, Matt Lomax of Medfield, Mass., and Scott LeClerc of Hudson, N.Y.

“There is no doubt we have added quality on the mound,” said Kolasinski. “Tarbox, Perry and Soper were three of the better high school pitcher around.”

Infielders Chris Pickering (Blue Hill), Adam Hunt (Hermon) and Mark Wheaton (Skowhegan) were also added to the Braves.

“As a group I think we have added some versatile kids,” said Kolasinski.

The University of Maine was represented well on the America East Winter and Spring Academic Honor Roll with 71 student-athletes earning the necessary grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The University of New Hampshire topped the list with 148 student-athletes making the grade.

Maine’s Sandi Carver (women’s basketball), Kathleen Cradock and Catherine Splane (women’s swimming) and Hannah Osborn (women’s track) each had a perfect 4.0 GPA. In all, 36 America East athletes earned straight A’s.

Eastern Maine Techincal College has named a pair of new coaches. James Schpeiser of Rockland will take over as EMTC’s head soccer coach and John Curry of Orrington was named the basketball coach.

Schpeiser, a student at the University of Maine, has spent the last two years as head coach of the Rockland High School girl’s tennis team.

Curry, a teacher at Central Middle School in East Corinth, spent the last seven years as head coach of the girls varsity basketball team at Central High School.
