Modest proposal

I’m writing in response to an article in today’s (Aug. 18) BDN about a dress code for the Paul Bunyan statue, banning partisan political statements or the advocacy of a particular position in areas of public policy dispute or controversy. Since such a proposal is due in large part to the controversy around the Don Imus request, I have a counter proposal. We will allow anyone who comes to Bangor from, say, New York, to put their name and face on a T-shirt on Paul Bunyan, if we in return can put a Stephen King T-shirt on the Statue of Liberty. Or any statue that celebrates the flavor of the visitor’s hometown community.

Now, can we let the Imus promotional stunt die a quiet death? After all, the easiest way I know to silence a loud mouthed, paramecium-brained jerk is to ignore him. Larry Heckler Brewer
