ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Bangor Blue Ox finished their 1997 Northeast League season on a high note by winning their fourth straight game – their longest victory streak of the season – and knocking Allentown out of thevictory streak of the season – and knocking Allentown out of the playoffs with a 5-2 verdict Sunday night.

Bangor, which outslugged Allentown 10-7 Saturday night, finishes the year 40-43 overall and 21-20 in the second half. Allentown, which entered the day tied for first in the Southern Division, ends the second half 22-18 and the season 39-43 overall.

Allentown’s loss gave Waterbury, Conn., the Southern Division second-half title and a playoff spot.

Bangor starter Pete Hartmann (8-6) had one of his best outings of the year. The lefthander struck out eight and walked three while allowing five hits and one earned run in 8 1/3 innings.

Hartmann also broke the team record for strikeouts in a season. His 118 K’s in 120 innings broke the mark of 109 set by Jamie Davis last year.

Bangor’s winning run came home on Karl Bussey’s two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning. The hit put Bangor up 3-0.

The Ox added two runs in the seventh on Tim Morrow’s RBI double and Hugh Walker’s RBI single.

Allentown scored twice in the top of the ninth after Hartmann struck out the leadoff man only to have him reach on a dropped third strike. After Steve Phillips’ single made it 5-2 Bangor, Garrett Quinn relieved Hartmann and earned his fifth save with a 6-4-3, game-ending double play.

Saturday night, the Blue Ox slammed five home runs against the Ambassadors.

Hugh Walker belted his 15th of the season in an eight-run second inning as the Ox sent 12 men to the plate and erupted for seven hits – including Chad White’s two-run homer, his fourth of the season. Walker had both of his hits in the second and drove in three runs.

Bangor added two more runs in the sixth on Willy Kingsbury’s leadoff home run and Steve Hine’s RBI double.

Mark Hreben picked up the win after pitching 3 2/3 innings of four-hit relief and Davis pitched the final inning for his sixth save.

Steve Phillips belted a two-run homer and Ken Tirpack followed with a solo blast in Allentown’s four-run fifth.
