Spurling, DeLili pace Bears

GORHAM – Heidi Spurling and Dedra DeLili tallied a goal and an assist each as the University of Maine handed Yale a 4-1 college field hockey loss on Saturday.

The 3-1 Black Bears scored on penalty corners by Jeni Turner and Karen Hebert in the first half, while Spurling and DeLili added goals after intermission. Becky Blue handed out two assists andHeather Watson added one. Goalkeeper Cindy Botett made six saves on seven shots.

Kate Niles scored the lone goal for 0-2 Yale in the second half. Megan Reed stopped 10 of 14 shots.

Colby 12, Eastern Conn. State 0

At Waterville, Betsy Metcalfe and Tobynne DiCaprio notched a hat trick each to lead Colby to victory Saturday. DiCaprio added an assist. Robin Ackley add two goals and Jaime Cassidy added three assists.

Colby outshot Eastern Connecticut State 53-0.

Women’s socccer

Quinnipiac 2, Maine 1 (OT)

At Orono, Quinnipiac tied the game with less than a minute left on a penalty kick and won it in overtime on Maureen Anderson’s goal.

Lisa Horowitz sent the game into overtime with 54 seconds left in regulation after Maine was called for a hand-ball in the penalty box. Julie McNulty made eight saves on 12 shots for 2-1 Quinnipiac.

Kristen Maxwell headed a Katie Larson offering pat McNulty for the 1-4 Black Bears. Karyn McMullin made 11 saves on 24 shots.

St. Joe’s wins two

At Standish on Sunday, St. Joseph’s won a rare doubleheader, beating Castleton State (Vt.) 3-2 in the completion of a game suspended on Saturday.

In Sunday’s complete contest, the Monks shut out the University of Maine-Machias 2-0. St. Joe’s unleashed 39 shots at goalie Lori Anderson, who saved 22 for 1-1 UMM.

Jenn Joseph and Becca Miller scored for the 2-0 Monks. Sharon Paradis and Kristine O’Shea added assists. Kendra Brown recorded her first shutout with three saves on four shots.

Colby 2, Norwich 0

At Norwich, Vt., Kim Waldron netted the game-winner early in the second half off an assist from Steph Zegras on Saturday. Caitlin Skulley scored off a Sara Lovitz assist.

Hather Garni stopped the one shot she faced for Colby College of Waterville.

Alex Evans saved 15 of 21 shots for Norwich.

Notre Dame 2, UM-Presque Isle 1

At Manchester, N.H., Michelle Caron scored two goals to lead Notre Dame College on Saturday. Erin Gleason assisted Caron for her first goal 5:43 into the first and Bridget Parenteau had the assist for Caron’s second goal at 13:11 into the second half.

Lauri Izzi saved two of four shots for 2-3 Notre Dame.

Heather Norsworthy cut the lead to 2-1 with an unassisted goal 22:56 into the second half. Keli Daigle recorded eight saves on 14 shots for the 1-3 Owls.

Men’s soccer

Massachusetts 3, Maine 2 (OT)

At Amherst, Mass., senior forward Mike Butler scored on a 12-yard lob with six seconds to go in the first sudden-death period to give the Minutemen the win on Saturday.

Jake Brodsky added a goal and assisted on the game-winner for 2-0-1 UMass, while Gavin Hewitt also scored a goal. Jeff Jablonski made five saves on 15 shots.

Aaron Benjamin scored two goals for the Black Bears. His first, off a Nate Winkel corner kick at 8:23 of the first half, gave 1-3 Maine a 1-0 lead. His second tied the game 20 minutes into the second half on a feed by Andy Guastaferro. Nathan Benoit made five saves on 13 shots.

St. Joe’s 2, UMPI 1

At Presque Isle, Jon Woodcock netted the game winner with 13:30 left in the game on an assist from Joe Scarano.

Mike Foye scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Tim Remington 20 minutes into the first half. Goalie Mike Bolanz saved 20 of 32 shots for 1-2 St. Joe’s.

David Hamel tied the game at one on a penalty kick with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. Jeremy Von Oesen recorded eight saves on 12 shots for 1-3 Owls.

Colby 4, Norwich 1

At Norwich, Vt., Andy Young scored two goals and assisted on another as the Mules opened their season by defeating winless Norwich.

Ben Waterhouse and Jeff Boyer added goals for Colby. Graham Nelson made 10 saves.

Tim Lull scored the goal for Norwich. John Puertas stopped 17 shots in net.

Southern Maine 2, MMA 1

At Gorham, Jamie Everhart scored both goals to lead the Huskies past Maine Maritime Academy Saturday.

Joel Bancroft and Matt Carrier assisted on the goals for 2-1 Southern Maine. Adam Swanson made six saves in goal.

Junior midfielder Angelo Rizzitello converted a Virgil Simmonds assist for 1-3 Maine Maritime. Mark Thibodeau made eight saves before playing in the field for MMA. Mike Bills made one save in relief.
