CAMDEN – Camden-Rockport High School’s Windjammers were swarming the Mount View High School Mustangs during the second half of Wednesday’s schoolboy soccer game here.
They were frustrated as they were locked in a 0-0 tie with the winless Mustangs, who had yet to score a goal this season.
As overtime neared, Windjammer senior stopper-midfielder Matt Pierce launched a long ball from midfield toward the Mustang penalty area.
One high hop later, the Windjammers had a fluke goal and a 1-0 victory.
Mount View junior goalie Jacob Von Oesen, younger brother of UM-Presque Isle standout goaltender Jeremy Von Oesen, came out to play the ball but it bounced in front of him and hopped over his head.
He dove to try to knock it away before it crossed the goal line but he couldn’t get to it in time.
The goal game with 3:30 left in regulation and gave Camden-Rockport its fifth win against one loss. Mount View is 0-4.
“I was just trying to get it upfield [to our strikers],” said Pierce, whose goal was his second of the season. “I usually strike the ball pretty good from that far out.”
Von Oesen said, “The ground was pretty hard. It took a high bounce and I couldn’t get to it.”
If it wasn’t for Von Oesen, the game would have been decided much earlier as Camden-Rockport outshot Mount View 43-9 including a 26-1 edge in the second half.
Von Oesen made 11 saves including several point-blank gems.
“He did a great job,” said Pierce.
Mount View generated a few scoring chances in the first half thanks to talented senior striker Jacob Doan, whose nifty playmaking created some counter-attack opportunities.
However, Doan was injured with 15:53 left in the game when he went up for a header and wound up falling off-balance into the leg of the oncoming Pierce. His rib and stomach area absorbed the blow. He was attended to on the ground for more than 20 minutes before being taken by ambulance to the Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Glen Cove.
A hospital spokesperson said Doan was examined, treated and released.
The Windjammers took control of the game against the gritty and hard-working Mustangs in the second half as their midfielders and backs were consistently winning 50-50 balls and then either distributing the ball to the strikers or taking the ball to the goal themselves.
Windjammer coach Don Palmer said, “In the first half, we were hanging on to the ball one or two touches too long and weren’t getting it to the open man. We released the ball sooner in the second half and did a much better job getting it to the wings and the wing halfbacks.”
Jim Wilson made five first-half saves for C-R and Drew Mazzeo was not forced to make one in the second half.
