Husson men in weekend sweep

BANGOR – The Husson College Braves swept a pair of weekend games with a 4-2 victory over Southern Maine on Sunday and a 3-1 win over Johnson State (Vt.) Saturday afternoon in men’s soccer action.

On Sunday, Joey Melanson and Kevin Burton each had a goal and an assist to pace the 4-2 Braves. Bill Borenstein and Sean Fleming each scored once and Richard Lewis had a pair of assists. Aaron Sargent made three saves on eight shots.

Jeff Bodge and Matt Carrier each scored goals for the 2-1 Huskies. Adam Swanson made five saves on 20 shots.

On Saturday, Burton had a goal and assist to lead Husson. Melanson and Fleming were the other goal-scorers. Sargent made six saves on 15 shots.

Johnson State’s Eric Ladoucer saved six of 23 shots.

UM-Machias 2, UM-Fort Kent 1

At Fort Kent, Donnie Dyer and Matthew Williams each scored goals Sunday to lead the University of Maine-Machias.

For the 5-1 Clippers, Chad Wilmot made eight saves on 12 shots. Jonathan Svor assisted on Dyer’s goal.

Scott Richardson scored unassisted for the 4-4-1 Bengals. Melik Khoury saved 13 of 25 shots.

EM Tech 1, UM-Fort Kent 0 Woman scores Eagles’ lone goal

At Fort Kent on Saturday, Jen Moleon scored the only goal of the game, lifting Eastern Maine Technical College of Bangor to victory over UMaine-Fort Kent.

Moleon is one of two women playing for the Eagles. Chris Chambers racked up 25 saves for Eastern Maine Tech.

UM-Farmington 5, Endicott 1

At Farmington on Saturday, Laughn Berthiaume booted three goals and assisted on the other two.

Kevin Olson scored two goals for 2-0 UMaine-Farmington. Sam Andy and Peter Coltart added assists. Josh Verville made two saves on five shots.

Endicott’s Jason Seymour and Neil Carroll combined to make nine saves on 16 shots.

MMA 3, King’s College 0

At Halifax, Nova Scotia, Angelo Rizzitello scored two goals in the first half Saturday to lead Maine Maritime Academy of Castine to victory.

Jamie Leveille scored a goal and Farhan Zbairan added two assists to the effort. Mike Bills and Derek Conlin combined to save all three shots they faced for 4-3 Mariners.

Dave Baldwin saved 11 of 14 shots for 5-2 King’s College.

Tufts 2, Colby 0

At Waterville on Saturday, Zach Dewhirst and Evan Dabby scored first-half goals for Tufts.

Steve McDermid made three saves on six shots for the 2-0 Jumbos.

Colby’s Graham Nelson came up with seven saves on 15 shots.

UNE 4, Thomas 0

At Biddeford on Saturday, Bryan Hill and Chris Saelens scored two goals each as the University of New England improved to 3-1.

Rich Niles and Ian Nagus combined for two saves for the Knights.

Nick Berry made eight stops for 1-5 Thomas College of Waterville.

Women’s soccer

Maine 1, Rhode Island 0

At Orono, Carolyn Fotiu scored 12:46 into the game and the Maine defense made the goal stand up.

Fotiu scored on a pass from Shannon Peterson for the 3-4 Black Bears. Karyn McMullin made four saves on 12 shots.

Ashley Stanley made seven saves on 10 shots for 0-6 Rhode Island.

Presque Isle splits a pair

At Presque Isle, the University of Maine-Presque Isle beat Husson College of Bangor 10-0 Sunday after losing 2-1 to UMaine-Farmington on Saturday.

On Saturday, UMF’s Jenn Lovejoy scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with a little more than five minutes left.

Lovejoy scored on a pass from Vanessa Wood for the 3-0 Beavers. Vicky Cyr also scored a goal. Pam Goyette made four saves on six shots.

Jamie Benner scored for Presque Isle on an assist from Heather Norsworthy. Keli Daigle made eight saves on 10 shots.

In Sunday’s game, Presque Isle scored five goals in each half to shut out Husson.

Shawn Callahan scored three times for 2-4 UMPI. Michelle Dufour and Heather Norsworthy each scored a pair of goals. Heather Von Oesen scored and assisted on four goals. Stephanie Thurlow and Kirsten Arndt netted goals.

Heather Hogan and Nicole Steinhart combined to stop 19 of 30 shots for 0-4 Husson.

Colby 2, Tufts 1

At Jesse Knoll scored on a corner kick in overtime, lifting the White Mules to victory.

Kathryn Rowen had a first-half goal for 2-1 Colby. Heather G Kathryn Rowen had a first-half goal for 2-1 Colby. Heather Garni made eight saves on 10 shots.

Tufts’ Jen Starrett made 17 saves on 19 shots.

UNE 4, Thomas 0

At Biddeford on Saturday, Jane Walker’s goal 10 minutes into the match was the only goal the University of New England would need.

Mandy Sage, Melissa Dauteuil and Nancy Silva posted second-half goals for the 4-2 Knights. Janet Lamy made two saves.

Tee Fecteau registered 10 saves for 1-3 Thomas College of Waterville.

Field hockey

Thomas 1, Husson 0 (2 OT)

At Bangor on Sunday, Kristin Clark scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke in the second overtime as Thomas College of Waterville beat Husson in the mutual season opener.

Heather Verrill saved 20 of 22 shots for Thomas.

Monica Cookson recorded seven shots on eight shots for Husson.

Colby 1, Tufts 0

At Waterville on Saturday, Jaime Cassidy and Robynne DeCaprio scored on the second and third penalty strokes as Colby downed Tufts in three overtimes.

Jane Stevens came up with 22 saves for the 2-1 White Mules.

Lindsey Schell made eight saves for the 1-2 Jumbos.
