Woman, 87, shoots moose

Barbara Wheaton of Patten, an 87-year-old grandmother, was one of 403 hunters Tuesday to register a moose during the annual one-week hunt in Maine.

Wheaton shot her moose in Allagash.

Of the 403 moose registered Tuesday, 330 were bulls and 73 were cows, according to Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesman V. Paul Reynolds. Added to Monday’s reported total of 360, the two-day total is 763, 39 ahead of last year, said Reynolds.

The largest moose taken in this year’s hunt, a 1,050-pound bull, was registered at the Fort Kent tagging station Tuesday.

The six-day hunt continues through Saturday. A total of 1,500 permits were awarded.
