A couple of undefeateds will try to stay that way in two of the seven games on Saturday’s high school football schedule.
Bangor (6-0) at Waterville (3-3), Drummond Field, 1:30 p.m. – Don’t expect to see a lot of passing in a game between the Pine Tree Conference’s top two rushing teams.
Quarterback Tommy Waterman, the No. 4 rusher in the PTC with 765 yards on 64 carries, heads up a Bangor rushing attack averaging 377.3 yards per game. Tailback Chris McLean and fullback Hampton Clarkson are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, among PTC rushers and both are averaging more than seven yards per carry.
Although it’s a big dropoff from the No. 1 to No. 2 rushing teams, the Purple Panthers are no slouches on the ground, averaging 250.8 yards per game.
The junior rushing duo of tailback Chad Hart and fullback Chris DeGuzman, who each also average better than seven yards per run, spearhead Waterville’s ground game. Hart is ninth in the conference with 474 yards on 64 carries and DeGuzman has 345 yards on 44 carries.
“Waterville’s probably only about two 5-yard situations away from having a 5-1 record,” said Bangor coach Gabby Price. “Their offense has a lot of misdirection and a lot of people pulling, so that puts importance on our guys staying at home.”
Waterville has used two quarterbacks this season due to injuries: Damien Fellows and Hart.
Foxcroft Academy (6-0) at John Bapst (3-3), Cameron Stadium, 7 p.m. – Can the Crusaders pull off their second stunning upset in three weeks and extend their winning streak to four games?
They’ll have their work cut out for them. The unbeaten Ponies from Dover-Foxcroft bring the No. 2 defense and No. 3 offense in the LTC Class B ranks to Bangor Saturday night.
Foxcroft’s offense starts with tailback Ben Preston, the leading scorer and rusher in the LTC – Class B or C – with 94 points and 910 yards.
John Bapst counters with running back Scott Tyree.
