BANGOR — One of two Aroostook County men arrested Friday on drug trafficking charges will be bailed out of jail if a suitable third-party custodian can be found, a magistrate judge ruled Monday.
Peter W. Wilson, 32, of Bridgewater has been in federal custody since his arrest four days ago. He may be released on $50,000 bail secured by a deed of trust but first he must find someone suitable to the court who is willing to take responsibility for his whereabouts.
Wilson’s mother and stepfather attended a hearing Monday at which he waived a preliminary examination. His parents cannot take custody of him, however, because they live out of state and the court wants him to remain in Maine.
Wilson was arrested last week with Randall D. Hunemuller, 40. A detention hearing and preliminary examination for Hunemuller are scheduled for today.
Each was charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and with one count of possession with intent to distribue methamphetamine, commonly referred to as “crank” or “speed.”
If convicted, Wilson faces a maximum penalty of 10 years to life in prison and a possible maximum fine of $4 million on the first count. He faces a maximum penalty of five years to 40 years in prison on the second count and a fine not to exceed $2 million.
The men were arrested last month on state drug trafficking charges. Before their latest arrests, they were free on bail from their earlier arrests.
The two were arrested Sept. 13 in Mars Hill by agents of the Maine Drug Enforcement Administration after Wilson signed for a package at the post office. The package was subsequently found to contain plastic sandwich bags filled with methamphetamine.
Court records allege that the drugs were shipped from California to Wilson’s post office box in Mars Hill.
