Officer overreacted

[The recent] Race for the Cure was a huge success. Much-needed funds for breast cancer research were raised with the help of local competitors, volunteers and businesses. This would not have been possible without the help of these individuals.

However, the musical entertainment did not run smoothly Saturday morning [Oct. 11] on Harlow Street. The organizers of the race had received the permits necessary for allowing a disc jockey to play music from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once the music began in the parking lot across from the Bangor Public Library, it was not long before a problem arose.

In response to several telephone complaints, a Bangor police officer had been sent to remedy the situation. The officer did not handle his job properly. He immediately began to yell at teen-age volunteers and made threats to confiscate equipment.

Since I too am a person who values those last few moments of sleep in the morning, I fully understand the feelings of the people who called with complaints. The officer would have been more helpful to everyone if instead of yelling and threatening high school students that the event will not be able to be held in Bangor next year, he had explained the situation to the person in charge of the event and helped resolve it. Next time, I hope this officer will act in an appropriate manner and support the community’s efforts to aid a worthy cause. Stephanie Jenkins Bangor
