BANGOR – Joey Melanson scored three goals and assisted on another to lead Husson past the University of Maine-Machias 5-1 Wednesday and cement a spot in the Maine Athletic Conference men’s soccer playoffs.
Reese Patterson scored the other two goals for 8-4-2 Husson, while Richard Lewis dished out three assists. Aaron Sargent made three saves on five shots in net.
Donnie Dyer converted a Matt Williams asssist for 6-10 UM-Machias. Chad Wilmot made six saves on 19 shots.
Bowdoin 2, Colby 1 (2OT)
At Brunswick, Dave DeCew scored the game-winner with a header to snap their five-game losing streak against the White Mules.
In the second overtime, Pat Hultgren won the ball at midfield and found Ian Mckee, who took a dribble and crossed to DeCew for the goal. Jason Lessard scored on a Hultgren pass thirty minutes into the game for 8-3 Bowdoin. Tom Casarella made four saves.
Colby tied the game on a Mark Melander direct kick from 25 yards out in the second half. Graham Nelson made 10 saves for the 6-4 White Mules.
St. Joe’s 2, Thomas 1 (2OT)
At Waterville, Tim Remington’s goal with 14:07 left in double overtime gave the Monks the win.
Joshua Beer crossed a pass from the right side to Remington on the far post for the score. Brian Morrill tied the game on a William Ward assist with 20:19 left in the second half. Mike Bolenz made four saves on 13 shots for 3-9-2 St. Joe’s.
Jahma Charles had 3-9 Thomas’ only goal on a Matt Day assist early in the first half. Dyke Lawrence made five saves on 16 shots.
Women’s soccer
Bates 4, UM-Farmington 1
At Lewiston, Kate O’Malley recorded her third career hat trick to lead the Bobcats to the win.
O’Malley had a first-half goal from Val Rosenberg, and two second-half goals, one unassisted and one from Colleen McCrave for 7-4 Bates. McCrave also had a goal. Susie Arnold and Katie Hammond made four saves on six shots.
Sara Kenoyer had 6-5-1 UMF’s lone goal in the second half from Jodi Dyer. Heather Elliot made 14 saves on 23 shots.
Field hockey
Southern Maine 2, Colby 1 (OT)
At Gorham, Paula Reed’s second goal of the day 1:36 into the first overtime gave the Huskies their fifth straight win.
Colby took the lead with 22 minutes left on Katie Taylor’s goal from Betsy Metcalfe. USM’s Reed then knotted the game in the second half off a Alison Drury pass.
Amy Lapham made seven saves on 15 shots for 9-7 Southern Maine, and Jane Stevens had eight saves on 28 shots for 3-8 Colby, who have lost seven straight.
