Ashland, Madawaska, Wisdom win> Eastern Maine soccer, field hockey championships decided in Saturday play

Eastern Maine soccer and field hockey champions were crowned Saturday, with Waterville coming out on top as both the girls and boys soccer teams beat Brunswick to win regional Class A titles.

It took the undefeated Waterville boys, ranked No. 1 in the Eastern Maine standings, four overtimes and one series of penalty kicks to beat No. 2 Brunswick 3-2. The Purple Panthers play Cape Elizabeth in Saturday’s Class A soccer state finals.

The biggest upset in Eastern Maine on Saturday was seventh-seeded Ashland’s 2-1 victory over No. 1 Wisdom of St. Agatha for the Class D crown. The Hornets meet the Mustangs of Monmouth Academy in the state game.

Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield, the No. 6 seed in Eastern Maine Class B, will play Yarmouth for the state title on Saturday after the Huskies topped the No. 4 Shiretowners of Houlton 2-1. In Class C, top-seeded Piscataquis Community of Guilford blanked No. 2 Madawaska 1-0 for the regional title. The Pirates face No. 1 Falmouth in Saturday’s state game.

In the girls bracket, fourth-seeded Waterville posted a mild upset, topping No. 2 Brunswick 1-0 for the Eastern Maine Class A title. The Purple Panthers play Cape Elizabeth for the Class A crown on Saturday.

In Eastern Maine Class B action, the No. 2 Mount Desert Island girls blanked fourth-seeded Bucksport 2-0 for the regional championship. The Trojans await the winner of the Western Maine title game between No. 7 Mountain Valley and No. 4 Fryeburg, which was postponed from Saturday and rescheduled for Monday.

In Eastern Maine Class C, undefeated and top-seeded Madawaska shut out No. 2 Searsport 3-0 for the regional title. The Owls play Georges Valley Buccaneers of Thomaston for the state championship. Fourth-seeded Wisdom won the Eastern Maine Class D crown with a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Greenville and will play No. 1 Waynflete of Portland for the state title.

Waterville’s run ended in the EM field hockey finals, as the undefeated Black Raiders of Winslow beat the No. 2 Panthers 2-1 for the Class B title. Winslow will meet Western Maine Class B winner Leavitt of Turner Center for the state title.

Second-seeded Skowhegan in Class A and Hall-Dale in Class C rolled to victories over the No. 1 teams in each class. For the Class A title, the Indians beat the Cony Rams of Augusta 2-1 and Hall-Dale of Hallowell topped PCHS 3-1. Skowhegan will play Bonny Eagle of West Buxton for the Class A title and Hall-Dale takes on Dirigo of Dixfield in the Class C showdown.

Boys soccer

Class A

Waterville 3, Brunswick 2 (4 OT)

At Waterville, J.T. Trinward put home the game winning kick in the penalty kicks phase as the 14-0-1 Purple Panthers took regional honors.

Brian LeBrasseur and Ben Wheeler scored regulation goals for Waterville. Shawn Flood, who stopped three penalty kicks in a row in the final round, made 14 saves on 26 shots.

Nick Parker scored the game-tying goal for 13-3-1 Brunswick with 19 seconds left in regulation. Carl Bernier scored a goal and Matt Bianchi had two assists. Chris Hale made 19 saves on 31 shots.

Class D

Ashland 2, Van Buren 1

At Van Buren, Randall Perry scored a goal and an assist to lead 11-6 Ashland.

Charles Robinson scored a goal and Darren Belskis added an assist. Aaron Bennett saved 12 of 20 shots.

Eric Ayotte scored a goal off an assist from Matt Lapierre for 12-3-2 Van Buren. Nate Marquis stopped eight of 10 shots.

Girls soccer

Class A

Waterville 1, Brunswick 0

At Brunswick, Erin Kelleher scored off a direct kick with less than four minutes left in the game to lift the 13-2 Panthers to victory over the 14-3 Dragons.

For Waterville, Autumn Pepin saved 13 of 27 shots on goal. Stephanie Peters tallied saves on 6 shots for Brunswick.

Class C

Madawaska 3, Searsport 0

At Madawaska, Kristen Pelletier scored two goals for 14-0-2 Madawaska.

Jenny Boucher had a goal and Steph Gagnon saved eight of 11 shots for the Owls. Erin Pelletier and Christina Lavertu each had an assist.

Jessie Barton recorded 12 saves on 29 shots as Searsport finishes the season at 13-3-1.

Class D

Wisdom 2, Greenville 1

At Greenville, Tracy Guerrette scored twice for the 11-3-3 Pioneers to lead Wisdom to the Eastern Maine Class D title.

Guerrette tied the game with 7:57 left in the first half on an assist from Courtney Langdon. Kelly Cyr had the assist on Guerrette’s second goal, which came at the 27:02 mark of the second period. Jen Derosier had nine saves on 2 shots for Wisdom.

Sarah Folsom scored the first goal unassisted with 26:02 left in the first half. Goalie Sara Ward saved nine of 15 shots for the 8-5-2 Lakers.

Field hockey

Class A

Skowhegan 2, Cony 1

At Cony, Tara Bedard scored the game-winner off her own rebound as 14-3 Skowhegan earned the victory.

Gina Dinan netted a goal off an assist from Christine Stevens and Fawn Albert saved 16 of 17 shots for the winners.

For the Rams, Shannon Finnegan scored a goal off an assist from Catherine Foster for 15-2 Cony. Crystal Nedik stopped 12 of 14 shots.

Class B

Winslow 2, Waterville 1

At Winslow, Kristy Ferran and Melanie White each netted a goal to lead 17-0 Winslow to victory.

Emily Roy saved four of five shots for the winners.

Kelly Smith gave 13-4 Waterville an early lead off an assist from Nellie Carrier 6:44 into the game. Amy Champagne turned away four of seven shots.
