Nokomis student suspended in SAD 48 crackdown

NEWPORT — One Nokomis Regional High School student will be out of school until Nov. 30, after an executive session of the school board Tuesday night.

The youth was not identified, but was suspended for a behavior problem, according to Superintendent William Braun. The boy attended the closed session with his parents.

The suspension is another example of SAD 48’s crackdown on misbehavior at the high school. Past incidents caused the board to expel several students. To re-enter school, it is the student’s responsibility to prove to the board a willingness to follow the rules and complete an education.

With a little more than a week remaining in the suspension, administrators appearing for the student advised him that he was fortunate to receive the light penalty. School in SAD 48 will close Friday and reopen Dec. 1. During Thanksgiving week, teachers will attend district workshops for in-service training.

School Director Kathy Seavey of Corinna asked the board’s policy committee to consider the district’s policy for making up missed schoolwork. She explained the policy is intended to curb absenteeism, but does not provide help for the student who may be absent for illness or injury.

The board also met in closed session to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken as a result of the discussion.

In other action, directors approved a field trip for students of Spanish as presented by teacher Kathleen Paulas. The trip will include three days in Quebec in a Latino district to offer students the opportunity to try their skills and observe the language in use. Students will raise funds to help defray individual costs, and take the trip in May.

Scheduled action on the superintendent’s evaluation was delayed because individual board members had not completed the evaluation sheet.

The board also approved support for the Youth Build Program of the Kennebec Valley and Penquis Community Action progams to join the district as an alternative education and training program for district students.
