PORTLAND – The Wendy’s Maine Open, held for the past two years at Point Sebago Golf and Beach Resort, will head back to Portland and a multi-site format beginning in 1998, the Maine State Golf Association announced Wednesday.

The Open will be played at Purpoodock Country Club, Falmouth Country Club, The Woodlands, and Portland Country Club. Each club will hold one round of the tournament, which includes three rounds and a Pro-Am. The event raises money for the MSGA scholarship fund. All four clubs have agreed to the deal, but it will be renewed yearly.

The Pro-Am will be held on Aug. 11, 1998 at Purpoodock, with an awards dinner to follow. The tournament starts at Falmouth Aug. 12 with 140 pros and 40 amateurs, with action moving to The Woodlands on Aug. 13. Those golfers making the cut will play the final round at Portland Aug. 14. The Open will be a spikeless event, since all four clubs enforce the policy. Entry fees are tentatively set at $250 for pros and $125 for amateurs. For more information call 846-3800.
