The staff at Mount View High School in Thorndike have selected the following students as the “students of the month” for October: senior Holly Lidstone, daughter of Shirley and Mel Lidstone of Unity; junior Cassie Pillsbury, daughter of Rosemary and Richard Pillsbury of Unity; sophomore Tracy Krueger, daughter of Wendy and John Krueger of Liberty; and freshman Aubrey Lappin, daughter of Linda and Joseph Mitchell of Unity. —-

Volunteers were able to make a difference in the playground at the St. Albans School on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Amos Lawrence, David Lawrence, Don Reynolds and Newman Gee brought in their tractors, excavators and trucks, and were able to put drainage pipe in the entire upper field. They were helped by Ellen Kire, Betty Kokotovich and Marcia Humphrey, who put in the pipe and hay needed to assure proper drainage. Boyd McNally donated the hay for this project and Amos Lawrence supplied the fill for the project. The hope is that this volunteer effort will enable the pupils to use the playground more in the spring of the year.

The staff, community and pupils want to thank these volunteers for their huge contribution of time, labor and materials. —-

Samantha Depoy, daughter of Donald and Elizabeth Depoy of Newburgh, was named to Carrabassett Valley Academy’s honor roll. CVA’s honor roll requires the student to achieve a minimum of 80 and above and top effort marks. —-

The Elizabethtown (Pa.) College Orchestra performed its first concert of the season on Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center. Julianna S. Hill, a junior majoring in music therapy, performed on flute in the concert. She is a 1995 graduate of Katahdin High School, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hill of Patten. She is a provost scholar, a music scholar, and a member of Alpha Mu and Sock-n-Buckskin.

She also has been designated as a recipient of the Grace C. Blough Music Scholarship for the 1997-98 academic year. The scholarship is awarded to students who excel in musical aptitude and performance, academic achievement and good personal character, and who exhibit financial need. —-

The Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs is offering three $500 scholarships for women. One will be awarded to a high school senior or recent graduate who will attend college in the fall; one will be awarded to a woman 25 or older for an accredited training progam or college course of study; and the third will be awarded to a woman whose post-secondary education is in progress. The Toddy Pond School in Belfast is offering home-schooling students a full-day or part-day arts and sports program on Tuesdays. The school also offers a drama program where the students plan and write their own play together, and meet regularly to practice before their performance on Feb. 6. The third annual Washington County Student Writing Symposium is accepting submissions from high school and home-taught students in Washington County. The symposium will be held this spring and will feature some of the best young writers as they read their works at the University of Maine at Machias. The symposium is sponsored by UMM’s Division of Arts and Letters and “Arby,” the English club of UMM.

Students in grades nine through 12 who live in Washington County are encouraged to submit by Jan. 15 an original piece of poetry or prose no longer than five pages.

Foxcroft Academy will be holding a “Financial Aid Evening” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the music room at Foxcroft Academy. Presenters include Sue Shogren, University of Maine; Charles Mercer, Finance Authority of Maine; and Colleen Grover, director of counseling services at FA. The presentation will offer the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding financial aid. —-

Amanda L’Italian a student attending the University of Maine at Fort Kent from Eagle Lake, recently received a $1,300 scholarship from the trustees of the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation. Recipients must be in the second, third, or fourth year, must be a Maine high school graduate, must be majoring in a business-related subject, must have good academic standing and must have financial need. All scholarships are awarded for second-semester expenses. —-

Darren James, a Calais High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leadership Award Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

One hundred fifty national PLA winnners will be chosen this spring to receive $1,000 scholarships.
