Colby tops UMF in consolation> USM, UMPI cruise in Maine Event

BANGOR – In the four-year history of the Maine Event, coach Dick Whitmore’s Colby White Mules had never been knocked into the consolation round.

The fact that the Mules found themselves in exactly that spot on Sunday didn’t please Whitmore very much, but some of the things he saw on the floor certainly did.

Colby put a constricting defensive effort on the University of Maine-Farmington – especially sophomore star Daren Meader – and cruised to a 76-57 win.

Colby improved to 3-1, while UMF dropped to 2-4.

In earlier action, Southern Maine snapped a 29-game losing skein that spanned three years, dropping Maine Maritime 104-42. The University of Maine-Presque Isle topped UM-Machias 86-74 in the second game of the day.

“I thought we played pretty well most of the time defensively,” Whitmore said. “We’re still a very, very inexperienced team on offense and it shows at times. But we have a lot of fun guys who can shoot a little bit.”

That they did.

Junior forward James Spidle was the top gun Sunday, tossing in 23 points, including four 3-pointers.

Dan Petrosky added 16 points and Nahum Meisner scored 10 for the Mules.

The key to Colby’s effort was a swarming man-to-man defense that took Meader out of the game.

“We switch a lot (over screens) and that helps us on a guy like him because it doesn’t let him get started a lot of the time.”

That was the case for much of the night, as Meader mustered only four shots in the first half and finished with 13 points. Eight of those pots came in the final four minutes.

In the first half, the two teams took turns bombing away from outside and nailed five 3-pointers each before the break.

Spidle had the hot hand for Colby, tossing in 16 points before intermission to key a 39-30 halftime advantage.

The Beavers were led by the outside sniping of senior speedster Laughn Berthiaume, who tossed in three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the first half and finished with 13. Jason White added nine first-half points and finished with 12.

Also hurting the Beavers was the loss of rugged forward Shawn Spadea to foul trouble. Spadea picked up his second foul just 4:46 into the game and was saddled with his third on a technical while arguing the call.
