Police say Hancock driver left fight with man attached to car

HANCOCK — A 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday night after an incident on U.S. Route 1 in which he allegedly drove away from a fistfight with one of the subjects hanging onto his car.

Michael T. McGraw of Hancock was charged with driving to endanger and driving after suspension, as well as on warrants issued for his arrest in Maine and Rhode Island. He allegedly swerved, nicking a car in the opposite lane, as he headed back to Eastside Road in Hancock after the incident, according to Maine State Police Trooper Clifford Peterson.

Peterson said McGraw had been involved in a fistfight with several men at a convenience store on Route 1 before 5 p.m. He said McGraw drove out of the parking lot with Michael Johnson of Hancock latched onto the side of his 1984 Grand Am.

As McGraw headed north, he allegedly swerved his vehicle into the opposite lane, striking another vehicle, and Johnson was dislodged from the car. Johnson had a gash on the back of his head and various cuts and bruises. A motorist stopped to assist him, Peterson said.

Sgt. Corey Bagley of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department also responded and tracked down McGraw at an Eastside Road residence. The subject was taken to the Hancock County Jail, according to Peterson.

Johnson was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth where his condition was being evaluated, Peterson said. He said Maine State Police Sgt. Kelly Barbee, McGovern Ambulance and the Hancock Fire Department assisted at the scene.
