Snowmobilers home after Howland crash

HOWLAND — Two young men returned home Tuesday after being hospitalized for head injuries received Monday in a snowmobile accident in Howland.

Brandon Soucier, 15, of Howland and Kevin Lawlor, 16, of West Enfield were injured when the snowmobile on which they were traveling hit a parked all-terrain vehicle on the ice-covered Piscataquis River in Howland, according to V. Paul Reynolds, spokesman for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

An ambulance took Soucier and Lawlor from the accident scene to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln. They later were transferred to St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor. They were released from the Bangor facility Tuesday, according to a hospital spokesman.

Soucier and Lawlor were traveling together on a snowmobile on the Piscataquis River at about 8:30 p.m. when their snowmobile hit the ATV, a four-wheel Suzuki, according to Reynolds. Both boys were wearing helmets when the accident occurred, he said.

The Suzuki was owned by Terry Hatch, 28, of Howland, who had been riding the vehicle on the river until the ATV became disabled. The accident occurred shortly after he left the vehicle and had walked back to his house nearby, Reynolds said.

Reynolds said witnesses at the scene reported to Dave Georgia, the investigating warden, that the snowmobile was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the Suzuki. Which boy was driving the snowmobile is unknown, he said.

The incident is under investigation by the department.
