RICHMOND — A 66-year-old Westbrook man continues to recover after a close call on the Kennebec River.
Authorities say Joseph Francoeur was visiting relatives in Richmond on Monday when he fell 20 feet down an embankment.
Although he was not hurt in the fall, the bank was too steep and footing too poor for him to climb back up. Francoeur had been clinging to the bank for almost 30 minutes by the time help arrived.
Richmond police Officer Richard Heald and three volunteers used a rope and extension ladder to rescue him.
They wrapped the rope around his waist and coaxed him up the ladder. Francoeur was taken to a doctor for medical treatment.
