ELLSWORTH — A Surry landowner convicted of assaulting a woman who walked on his beachfront property has filed an appeal with the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

James C. Taylor, 54, is appealing his convictions on terrorizing, assault and criminal threatening charges, which were handed up by a jury Nov. 20 in Hancock County Superior Court.

He was convicted of attacking 33-year-old Astrig Tanguay as she walked her puppy in front of his Newbury Neck home.

Tanguay alleged that upon seeing her, Taylor pushed her into a rock pile, and threatened to rape, kill, and throw her into the ocean. The Surry woman, who was renting a house nearby, said she suffered back, hip and other injuries as a result of the incident.

Taylor was found guilty and sentenced to eight months in jail with all but 30 days suspended. He also was ordered to pay $3,000 in fines, and $1,732 to cover Tanguay’s medical expenses.

No date has been set for the appeal, but Taylor has been ordered to post bail of $6,000 by Jan. 6.
