Rachel Bouchard leads Maine hall inductees

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight former athletes into its ranks on June 7 at the Italian Heritage Foundation in Portland.

Heading the list of inductees are star University of Maine basketball player Rachel Bouchard of Farmingdale and longtime Colby College men’s basketball coach Richard L. Whitmore of Waterville.

Also being inducted are: triathlete David Crawford of Cumberland, harness racer Donald J. Richards, standout Colby athlete Orin Schiro and Bowdoin great Elford “Brud” Stover. Earning their honors posthumously are former University of Maine football player Henry D. Dombkowski of Paterson, N.J., and water skier Herbert “Skip” Charles of Portland.

Bouchard made left her mark at UMaine during her career. She played for the Black Bears from 1987-1991 and was a captain of the Black Bears for her last three years. During her tenure at Maine, the Black Bears compiled an 85-29 record and the 6-foot-1 center rewrote the university and conference record books.

By the time she graduated, Bouchard had established school, league and New England records for most points scored in a career with 2,405. She also grabbed 1,299 rebounds in her career. In all, Bouchard held 17 school records when she graduated.

Bouchard also received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, and was named a GTE Academic All-American.
