Woman injured in sled crash> Rider rolled snowmobile over in bid to avoid jump

SHERMAN — A Mattawamkeag woman suffered a possible broken arm Monday when her snowmobile rolled over.

Phyllis Spencer, age unknown, of Mattawamkeag was in a group of three snowmobiles traveling Monday morning on Interconnecting Trail System Route 83 when the accident occurred, according to Warden Alvin Theriault.

The group had left the trail and was headed across a frozen field in Golden Ridge. Kevin Lee, who Theriault said was riding ahead of Spencer, tried to jump a plowed road, but failed, and his snowmobile rolled over several times, breaking the cowling.

Lee was not seriously hurt, but did complain of some pain, Theriault said.

Spencer saw what happened and braked abruptly, causing her snowmobile to lock up and go sideways. As it started to tip, Spencer put out her arm to stop, said Theriault. Her arm went through the snow crust and may have been broken.

Spencer’s snowmobile did not hit Lee’s snowmobile.

Spencer was reportedly taken by relatives to a local hospital for treatment.

The third member of the group, David Fogg, also of Mattawamkeag, was not involved in the accident.
