Community Center plan falls through

VEAZIE — A proposal for redeveloping the Community Center, which will become available later this year, has fallen through.

The Economic Development Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, to review a revised request for redevelopment proposals.

The Women’s Business Development Corp., a statewide group created to help small businesses, had hoped to convert the building into offices.

In a letter to Town Manager William Reed, however, WBDC Chairwoman Mary Ellen Johnston wrote that her organization is unable to pursue the necessary grant at this time because its executive director, Lou Chamberland, has resigned.

The group’s most pressing need, Johnston noted, is to find a new director and return to business as usual.

Because it isn’t accessible to people with handicaps, the Community Center has found its use increasingly limited.

Veazie no longer holds its town meetings there, and once the new elementary school is open, it will not be needed for physical education classes.

Reed said that WBDC offered the town $500 as reimbursement for the time and effort municipal staff put into assisting the group with its effort to reuse the building.
