Absentee ballots ready for special election

AUGUSTA — Absentee ballots are available for the special election to be held Tuesday, Feb. 10, on the People’s Veto drive to repeal the anti-discrimination law passed by the Legislature in the last election.

Secretary of State Dan A. Gwadosky encourages everyone to vote, including people unable to go to the polls, who should contact their town or city clerks to obtain absentee ballots.

Voters may contact the municipal clerk and complete an application for an absentee ballot by mail, fax or telephone, Gwadosky said. The absentee ballots will be available through Election Day. Those wanting to vote by absentee ballot but not registered also may contact their clerk for absentee registration, Gwadosky said.

Family members may apply for an absentee ballot in writing on behalf of a person. No witnesses are required for such voting unless the voter required assistance when casting the ballot.

Completed ballots must be received by the clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. For informaiton, call 287-4186 or visit the secretary of state’s Web site at www.state.me.us/sos/sos.htm. The site also provides information on the referendum question.
