NEW LONDON, Conn. – Allison Lorenz and Christina Hedges each scored three goals Sunday to lead the University of Maine to a 6-1 win over Connecticut College in women’s ice hockey action.

UMaine snapped a three-game losing streak, improving to 6-6-2. Lorenz had two scores in the first period, while Hedges matched with two in the third. Alicia Gilmore made two assists. Amy Oliver and Sarah Dolan combined on 26 saves.

Ery Largay had the 0-13-1 Camels’ only goal in the third period. Claudia Goodrich made 24 saves.

Men’s basketball

UM-Fort Kent wins two

At Fort Kent, the Univeristy of Maine-Fort Kent earned two victories, a 118-55 win over Unity on Saturday and a 108-71 win over the University of Maine-Augusta on Sunday.

In the Saturday game, Ish Gelpi and Shaun Tomblin led the University of Maine-Fort Kent with 19 points appiece and Chris Angelosante tossed in 15.

Aaron Liberty and Josh Sargent each scored 11 points to pace Unity. Jim Piccvito had 10.

In the Sunday game, Gelpi and Tomblin again paced the Bengals, combining for 58 points.

Gelpi finished with 30 points, eight steals and eight assists while Tomblin had 28 points and 15 rebounds.

Charles Martz scored 21 points for the University of Maine-Augusta. Rob Westbye and Todd Gunzinger added 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Barkley breaks MCI record

At Pittsfield, Erick Barkley scored 51 points for Maine Central Institute, breaking the school record for points in a single game set by current New Jersey Nets guard Sam Cassell in 1988.

Barkley led the squad to the title in the MCI Invitational with a 121-94 victory over Winchendon of Massachusetts. Kevin Braswell chipped in with 16 and Aaron Turner grabbed 12 rebounds. Rashon Bruno led Winchendon with 21.

Barkley scored 40 in Saturday’s 136-97 semifinal victory over Redemption Christian. Aaron Turner added 22 points. Willie White led Redemption of Troy, NY with 22.

At Biddeford Saturday, Wendy Atwood broke the University of New England scoring record, but Emily Walker and Liza Doughty combined for 10 points for the Braves in the extra period.

Atwood’s record-breaker came on a 3-pointer with more than 16 minutes remaining in the game. Her game-high 22 points gives her 1,629 in her career, surpassing Veronica Scott’s old mark.

Walker led Husson with 16 points. Kelly Dow had 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Doughty scored 13.

Maine Maritime splits games

The Lady Mariners split their weekend games, defeating Bay Path 65-63 on Saturday in Springfield, Mass., and dropping a 39-38 contest to Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass., on Sunday.

On Saturday, Vicky Jones’ free throw with eight seconds remaining gave Maine Maritime an edge they wouldn’t relinquish.

Monica Ratliff scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the first half for MMA. Stacey Ryan had 21, and Robin Merrill registered 15 points to go with 11 rebounds.

On Sunday, Tia Cleckley converted a free throw with half a second remaining to give Lesley College the win.

Lindsay Smith led the Mariners with 12 points. Stacey Ryan had 11 points.
