This is a dark day in Maine’s history. When given a choice the voters loudly and clearly demanded to retain their right to hate. I am absolutely devastated. I have always thought that Maine people were independent thinkers, with a strong sense of fairness and decency. I didn’t think people would be swayed by the litany of half-truths, lies and innuendo put forth by the Christian Civic League and the Christian Coalition.

Stay tuned, folks, we haven’t heard the last of these people. This was not the only item on their agenda. They worked very hard to instill fear in the voters and sadly, it worked. Sandra Bush Sedgwick

I used to be from the great state of Maine, with its bold coast and magnificent forests. The first state to elect a woman to the U.S. Senate and to elect not one but two independent governors. The state that prided itself for its Yankee ingenuity and fierce sense of independence.

Now I am from the state that discriminates against people. Ellen Farnsworth Urquhart Bucks Harbor

As I sit here writing this, I don’t think I have ever been prouder to be a citizen of the great state of Maine. Maine people have once again spoken through the power of the ballot box, and said “No. We don’t want special rights!” Not only have we said we believe homosexuality is immoral and abnormal; we have said, “You won’t get special treatment if that is what you claim to be!” The people of Maine are not foolish. We don’t need people from out of state to tell us how to live our lives. We certainly don’t need Gov. King to tell us what is right.

The citizen’s veto should speak volumes to our elected representatives: “Get your heads out of the sand and listen to the citizens whom you represent.” Had they been listening, we would not be voting on this veto; special rights never would have become law in the first place. Listen to your constituents, not the big money from out of state. Mike Lamson Brewer
