Jonesport-Beals coach Ordie Alley was concerned Machias may make a rout of their Tuesday Class D boys quarterfinal matchup.

The Royals trailed 13-6 when Alley called a 20-second timeout with 3:21 left in the first quarter.

“I didn’t like the looks of things,” Alley said about his timeout call. He would like the way the game ended, as the No. 7 Royals upset No. 2 Machias 74-62 at the Bangor Auditorium.

Jonesport-Beals will now play No. 6 Deer Isle-Stonington in a 3:35 p.m. semifinal game Thursday.

The Royals were having trouble containing Machias junior forward Benjamin Reynolds, who scored 12 of the first 13 points for the Bulldogs in the first 4:36 of the game.

Alley decided to switch from man-to-man to a zone defense during the timeout.

“We play a lot more aggressive out of a zone,” Alley said.

And it kept Reynolds at bay, as he scored only five more points the rest of the contest.

“I think we had a lot of nerves early,” Alley added.

The Royals also received a strong effort from senior guard Brian Alley, who tossed in a game-high 32 points. He gave the Royals their first lead of the day, one they would not relinquish, with a putback basket with 7:30 left in the second quarter.

Keyed by senior center Josh Knowlton’s six points, Jonesport-Beals sealed the win with a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter, stretching a two-point lead to a 68-56 advantage with 2:37 left.

Knowlton finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the 9-10 Royals and James Robinson pumped in 13.

For Machias coach Ken Johnson, the loss could be easily explained.

“It was turnovers that killed us,” Johnson said. “No other explanation is necessary.” The 11-8 Bulldogs finished with 21 turnovers.

Machias senior Ben Edwards finished his career with 28 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Edwards added 17.
