The University of Maine at Presque Isle and Time Warner Cable of Maine are co-sponsoring a scholarly competition among high schools in Aroostook County. “County Scholars” will begin taping on Thursday, Feb. 26, in Wieden Auditorium. The shows will air at 8 p.m. on channel 9, Wednesday and Sunday evenings.
The project was a success in its initial year and the university and Time Warner are eager to bring the show back with a few adjustments. The first, very visible difference is the set. Time Warner employed professional, Richard Robles, to design and build a permanent set. Also, questions for the competitions have been purchased through High School Bowl, an affiliate of College Bowl Co. Inc. There will still be three rounds but those rounds will not be defined by the difficulty of the questions. Every round will feature “toss up” questions. Once a team has answered a toss-up question correctly, it is eligible for a bonus question.
Twelve County high schools will be participating with four-member teams. Joe Zubrick, interim associate vice president for academic affairs, will again be the moderator; Heather Wilson, director of student activities, will be scorekeeper; Dr. Woodroow Stroble, director of institutional planning and technology will serve as the judge; and Erin Benson, director of university relations, will be the timekeeper.
