MDI workshop to focus on apple tree restoration

MOUNT DESERT — Restoring old apple trees will be the topic of a workshop by the MDI Historical Society from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Somesville Fire House on Route 102.

Stephen Page, an environmental designer and landscape contractor from Searsmont, will present the workshop. He started his first orchard in 1974 and has begun an orchard management service. Page is coauthor of the book “The Orchard Almanac,” and is interested in preservation of farmland also.

Page says in his book it is important to maintain old trees to preserve historic varieties. Among the topics of the workshop will be fertilizing soil, pruning, thinning and pest control.

The course will include time for questions, and participants should bring lunches. Early registration is encouraged. Call Jaylene Roths at 288-3723 or send $7.50 for MDI Historical Society members, $10 for nonmembers, to MDI Historical Society, P.O. Box 653, Mount Desert 04660.
