BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Ball State University Cardinals scored 11 runs in the second and third innings to defeat the University of Maine 15-6 in college baseball action Wednesday.

UMaine, now 5-6, opened the scoring in the top of the first as Brian Poire doubled and scored. T.J. Sheedy drove in Poire and later scored on a wild pitch, giving Maine a 2-0 lead.

Ball State countered with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals added seven runs on eight hits in the third and take an 11-2 lead.

The Cardinals strung together six consecutive hits in the third to chase Maine starter Jason Hall after two-plus innings of work. Jeremy Ridley tagged a three-run homer in the inning.

Maine scored a pair of runs in both the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, Chris Domurat scored on a bases loaded walk and Marc Halsted scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Bears scored two runs on one hit in the ninth.

Hall took the loss for Maine to drop to 0-3 on the season. Jamie Spottz is 1-0 with the win.

Worcester State 16, Husson 11

At Tampa, Mark Richards and Jason Piskator each tripled in a pair of runs in the ninth inning as Worcester (Mass.) State scored five unearned runs to break an 11-11 tie.

Piskator had two doubles and two singles to go with his triple for the 2-2 winners. Smoky Rickerd added a double and two singles.

Danny Curtis had a double and two singles for 1-3 Husson and Brian Malo doubled and singled.

Women’s basketball

Shawnee St. 82, UMF 51

At Sioux City, Iowa, Shawnee State University scored 13 unanswered points midway through the second half to shake off the University of Maine-Farmington in the first round of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The Beavers stayed within striking distance until the Shawnee State run, trailing by seven with a little more than 16 minutes left in the game. Shawnee then put on its spurt.

Brandi Baker led Shawnee State with 16 points. Brandi Munn added 15 points, Vernita Previtt 14, and Erica Hayes 13 plus 11 rebounds.

Margo Bailey scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for UMF.

Softball

Maine sweeps doubleheader

At Ocoee, Fla., the University of Maine got strong pitching performances in both ends of a doubleheader vs. Virginia Tech and Yale.

In the first game, Jen Burton went the distance, allowing only two hits and one earned run as Maine downed Yale 5-1.

Burton struck out four and walked two for the Bears. Nicole Gamblin had a solo homer and a single. Stacey Sullivan had a single and two RBIs. Karyn McMullin added a single and an RBI.

Annie Sharp and Kathy Ching had a single each for 5-2 Yale.

In the second game, Carrie Green pitched a five-hit shutout and Maine scored a run in the fourth to topple Virginia Tech 1-0.

Green (3-1) struck out three and didn’t allow a walk as Maine improved to 7-9. Michelle Puls had two hits and scored a run.

Christy Huber pitched a complete game six-hitter for Virginia Tech, now 10-8.
