Cindy Blodgett of the University of Maine, who is in St. Louis today as part of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four festivities, has been named to the ECAC Division I Women’s Basketball All-Star first team for the third straight season.
Blodgett, a senior guard from Clinton, averaged 27.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals while leading the Black Bears to their fourth consecutive America East title and fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. She will compete in Saturday’s WBCA/Honda All-Star Challenge in St. Louis.
Allison Feaster of Harvard, who is close to ending Blodgett’s two-year hold on the NCAA Division I scoring title, was selected as the ECAC Division I Women’s Player of the Year. She and Blodgett are joined on the All-ECAC squad by America East Player of the Year Karalyn Church of Vermont, AP All-American Nykesha Sales of Connecticut, and Amy O’Brien of Holy Cross.
Diana Caramanico of the University of Pennsylvania was chosen the ECAC Rookie of the Year after being named the top player in the Ivy League last season.
The ECAC All-Star Team was selected by a committee made up of sportswriters, broadcasters and athletics administrators. Feaster will receive her award April 14 during the ECAC Spring Convention in Warwick, R.I.
Feaster, a 5-foot-11 senior froward from Houston, ended the season averaging 28.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.6 assists for the Crimson. She sparked 16th-seeded Harvard to the first upset of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament as the Crimson knocked off Stanford.
Senior center fielder T.J. Sheedy of the University of Maine takes an 11-game hitting streak into the Black Bears’ five-game road trip to Wagner (N.Y.) and Delaware later this week.
Sheedy, an All-America East pick from Stoneham, Mass., continued his solid production out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order in Monday’s doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island.
Sheedy leads UMaine with a .400 batting average, including five doubles and 12 RBIs. His .486 on-base percentage is the best on the ballclub.
Speaking of streaks, UMaine teammate Brian Poire had an eight-game hitting streak snapped Monday when he went hitless in the second game at Rhode Island. Poire, who has hit in 14 of 16 contests this season, ranks second on the team with a .381 batting average.
