Berea takes two from Terriers

FORT PIERCE, Fla., – Berea College of Berea, Ky., started Thomas College’s season on a sour note Thursday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader 11-1 and 5-4.

In the opener, Thomas starter Chad Boyd struggled through three innings of work, allowing 11 runs on five hits and 10 walks – seven of which came in the first. Shawn Linnehan went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Thomas.

In the second game, Thomas took a 2-0 lead early, but 3-6 Berea answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Linnehan went 2-for-3 with RBI singles. Matt Ferreira went 3-for-4 and Geoff Burnham 3-for-3. Each knocked in runs. Don Couture singled twice.

Millersville sweeps Thomas

At Fort Pierce, Fla., Thomas College of Waterville was held to seven hits and no runs in season-opening losses 11-0 and 12-0 losses to 6-2 Millersville (Pa.).

In the opener, Dana Trout came a homer short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Millersville scored six runs in the second thanks to four Thomas errors. Heather Currie went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Janell Smith rapped two hits.

Miscues also plagued Thomas in the second game as six errors in the fourth inning led to nine Millersville runs. Trout, Smith and Andie Iusnock all had RBIs in the frame. Smith had two hits.
